About a year ago I bought Studio One Artist 2, Audiobox USB and an M7 condenser mic together as a package purchase. Although at the time I wasn’t able to explore Studio One thoroughly, I did learn how to record and playback audio tracks, mix a little, and tweak things here and there. I added a Faderport and an M-Audio Keystation Mini-32 controller as external devices. Everything was working fine. Unfortunately I had to put my little recording hobby on hold for about a year.
The other day I found some time to record again and learn more about Studio One. To my surprise, however, I couldn’t make any audio recordings. Here are some details of the problem:
1. When I click record, the cursor line moves across the screen, painting the track green (as usual), but no wave form appears, which would indicate that Studio One isn’t recording anything. This is confirmed when I play back the track: nothing comes out of my audio monitors.
2. I know that my mic is picking up sound because I can see the levels moving up and down when I strum my guitar. I also know that my monitors are functioning because I can hear my MIDI controller when I play it (using Presence plugins). Studio One also hears the MIDI controller since level response is visible.
3. Studio One records and plays back anything that I play on the MIDI controller track. It’s just won’t record audio input.
4. Finally, I clicked various options at random on the menu bar to see if any would make a difference. After yet again attempting and failing to record an audio track, I clicked Normalize Audio under the Audio drop-down menu. Suddenly the previously absent waveforms appeared in the audio track. When I hit playback, I could hear my guitar (or voice) far off in the distance and very grainy. Regardless, I am not able to make the wavelengths appear when I am in the process of recording something - they only appear, along with some barely audible low-quality sound, after I've recorded. The sound quality is worse than very, very bad. Also, I have to click Normalize Audio each time I've recorded something to get this poor result, and sometimes it doesn't even work.
Here’s what I’ve done to try to solve this problem. None of these things has actually worked or shed any light:
1. I have reviewed my audio I/O setups and everything looks fine. When I intend to record a new song, I just click Audiobox USB automatic setup anyway.
2. I’ve checked the Audiobox USB device itself. Phantom power is engaged. When recording, I turn the mixer nob to Input (2:00); when I want to hear what I’ve recorded, I turn the mixer nob to Playback (4:00). I’ve kept all the other nobs at 12:00. Studio One still won’t record audio or play back audio.
3. I’ve closed whatever song I’m currently working on and opened a new song to see if this makes a difference. No difference: I’m unable to record audio on any track in any file.
4. I’ve rebooted my computer several times. No cigar. I’m using Windows 7, 64-bit, and I’ve set up Studio One for 64-bit.
5. I’ve reinstalled the software for Studio One Artist and Audiobox. The problem still won’t resolve.
Does anyone know what the problem could be or where I might go from here?
Thanks in advance.
